did you know that the way computer works is actually adopted from the way our mind works?? sure we know… computers have memory and so does our mind, computers have processor and so does our mind. but there’s always something different between our mind and the computer…
It’s not just that the computer is a machine and human mind is an organ, but there is something else different. it’s the input and output itself. Mr.D (Dikara barcah a.k.a one of my favorite lecturer) once taught us the concept of GIGO or also known as “Garbage in Garbage out”, means that no matter what we insert to the computer then that’s exactly what comes out of it. that’s the different!! our mind doesn’t really work like that, or suppose not to work like that..
One major different between our mind and the computer is that our mind is alive, it is a part of the soul in our self. the computer is a machine, something that human made, something that is made by the human mind. this major different is also the basic concept of information that is saved in our mind and in the memory of the computer..
information in our mind is alive… information in the computer memory does not alive. and what does alive means? it can move, it can do something, it can influence something. information in computer does not move anywhere unless we retrieve it, delete it, open it, close it, their activity is always based on our instruction, our command. different thing is that information in our mind move itself, even worse, it can influence us, or rule us….
take an example of an information that we get from a chat. someone says that miss X is a very inpolite person. she is a terribly bad person. and that person says that she spanks her child every morning. we may listen to that information accidentally but still that information has been delivered into our mind. it interacts with other information in our mind just like a new neighbor that just moved in. and then one day we met miss X and somehow we arranged a nice morning jog together. she didn’t show up. we were a little upset. the next day she didn’t show up again although this morning she had apologized. the second time she broke her promise we were too disappointed and dislike her right away. maybe she is a bad person, just like that woman said before…
turns out that she had too take care of her sick mom, or she was sick, or even if she lied, maybe she doesn’t want us to know that it was actually hard for her to join our jog. if she was a new friend that we had never heard about before we might react differently. we may visit her and ask her why nicely instead of making unfair judgement without any true evidence…
another example is an ad. we see an ad of an electronic store. we did not need any electronic equipment at that time. but when comes the time we need one, suddenly that electronic store name pop up in our mind. we does not like alcohol but suddenly when we are troubled we start to imagine the joy of swallowing alcohol. etc… etc….
So what to do???
we file them! we file those information. 3 step in filing information in our mind.
1. Analise the info we receive. is it good info or bad info? good info has evidence and does not judge negatively toward someone or something.
2. Filter. bad info, get rid of it. literary tell to our self “get out of my mind!” and save the good one.
3. Filing. filing means put it in the right file. info about school put in the school folder that we create in our mind. info about movies, put in the folder movie that is put inside the recreation folder. mom, dad, sister, brother are in the family folder. tika, delia, icha, issey, nadia, rani are in friends folder. etc… etc…
Believe it or not, it will help us remember easily the things that we’ve recorded in our mind. smart people save their datas in neat filing. take a peek on their computer. they have almost all files in the connected folder. that represent their mind. now take a look at your My Documents folder. are those files arrange neatly? or there are still some files lost without identity or without a home (folder)??
